When you book, we figure out together how your visit will be billed. About 60 percent of visits are billed to medical insurance rather than vision insurance. We'll sort that out before you sit in the chair.

Vision Plan vs. Medical Plan: What Is the Difference

Two plans, two separate jobs.

  • Vision plan: Covers a routine exam, refraction, and a glasses or contact lens benefit. Common vision plans include VSP, EyeMed, and Superior Vision.
  • Medical plan: Covers diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions like dry eye, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, sudden vision changes, and red eye.

Some visits involve both. We identify which plan applies to each part of your visit and bill accordingly. You know what to expect before your exam starts.

Does Medicare cover my eye exam?

Medicare covers the medical portion of an eye exam. That includes glaucoma evaluation, diabetic retinopathy monitoring, and cataract assessment. It does not cover a routine refraction for glasses.

What if I am out of network?

Many plans pay a partial out-of-network benefit. We will verify your specific plan and give you the dollar figure before your appointment.

Can I use both vision and medical insurance in one visit?
